One of Mallinckrodt’s founders, Edward Mallinckrodt, was born on this date in 1845. He and his brothers, Gustavo and Otto, established G. Mallinckrodt and Company in 1867 on the banks of the Mississippi River in St. Louis, Missouri. The company was founded to supply local pharmacists with much-needed fine chemicals, and was the only chemical company west of Philadelphia at the time. By the early 1880s, Edward Mallinckrodt was the sole proprietor of the company that is today known as Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals.
