St. Louis Area Mallinckrodt Employees Lend a Helping Hand to Neighbors During Global Month of Service

Deciding where to volunteer can be a daunting task with so many important causes to support. For employees at Mallinckrodt’s campus in Webster Groves, Mo., the decision was fairly simple – they literally walked to the office next door to ask how they could help.

Their neighbors are Rebuilding Together St. Louis, a nonprofit organization that restores and improves the homes of elderly, disabled and low-income homeowners who need an extra hand. This past October marked the third time Mallinckrodt employees sponsored a home with Rebuilding Together St. Louis, sending 19 employees to help one elderly homeowner with a variety of maintenance, repair and minor construction projects.

Rebuilding Together is a national organization that was founded 45 years ago in Midland, Texas. The St. Louis chapter opened in 1992. It has assisted more than 2,800 homeowners and completed 52 community projects in over 50 neighborhoods across the region.

“Volunteering with Rebuilding Together opened my eyes to how great the need is for this type of service,” said Andrew Maerz, Procurement Director for Mallinckrodt. “Their current volunteer base and funding lies well below the number of homeowners in need of assistance, so it’s nice to feel like we’re contributing in some way.”

The Mallinckrodt team always leaves energized by the experience, so much so that they intend to sponsor a home at least annually.
