April is Sarcoidosis Awareness Month! The Foundation for Sarcoidosis Research (FSR) and the American College of Chest Physicians (CHEST) have partnered to launch a year-long educational campaign on sarcoidosis. The campaign is supported in part by a grant from Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals, a demonstration of the company’s commitment to the sarcoidosis community.
Sarcoidosis (pronounced SAR-COY-DOE-SIS) is an inflammatory disease caused by a malfunction of the body’s immune system. In people with sarcoidosis, the immune system overreacts, resulting in damage to the body’s tissues. Inflammatory cells clump together and form patches of cells called granulomas, which can cause different symptoms and even interfere with the way certain organs function. As a disease that is often misdiagnosed and that can go undetected for many years, sarcoidosis likely affects many more than those currently identified as sufferers.
The new campaign, Seek Answers. Inspire Results. provides resources to patients and caregivers to help understand and manage sarcoidosis. The resources include a new “Understanding Sarcoidosis” infographic, shown below. Click here for more information on the campaign and the disease.
