As part of Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals’ commitment to supporting STEM education, Dr. Elizabeth Collins, Senior Quality Director at the Dublin facility, leads an industry wide group in the Dublin area with the aim of encouraging young people to study science. Through this group, Mallinckrodt, along with a number of other local pharmaceutical companies, got involved in the recent I Wish conference.
In February 2017, I Wish – an initiative to inspire, encourage and motivate young high school female students to pursue careers in STEM – hosted a conference with interactive exhibitions in both Dublin and Cork. The conference consisted of workshops, daily keynote speakers and engaging talks by women who are at the top of their field in STEM. There were also interactive exhibition spaces where companies engaged with the students directly through experiments and demonstrations of what they actually do.
Mallinckrodt was delighted to support the initiative by presenting at one of the main booths in the exhibition area. A cross functional group from the company’s Dublin site supported the event and spoke about their education & experience in the pharmaceutical industry to the young women who attended.
I Wish has an ambitious goal to increase female participation in higher education STEM courses to 30% by 2020. Although the survey of students from the 2017 event will not be available for some time, the survey completed after the 2016 event showed that 60% of students changed their subject choices for their senior cycle as a result of the I Wish conference.
