October is Mallinckrodt’s Global Month of Service, a company-wide initiative encouraging employees to give back to our local communities through volunteer and fundraising events.
In America, hunger has no limits – it impacts virtually every community in the U.S., and many of our own. According to a recent report by the national nonprofit Hunger Free America, 15 million – one in ten – working adults in the U.S. struggle with hunger. For individuals and families struggling with food insecurity, local community foodbanks and pantries are a beacon of hope and help for them.
Earlier this month, a group of Mallinckrodt employees from our office in Hazelwood, MO. volunteered their time at the St. Louis Area Foodbank – a local nonprofit that has been on a mission working to end hunger for over 40 years.
Since 1975, The St. Louis Area Foodbank has grown to become the region’s largest food distribution charity dedicated to feeding those in need. With the partnership of over 500 hunger-relief programs and local agencies – including soup kitchens, food pantries, shelters, and residential programs – the St. Louis Area Foodbank is able to serve communities across 26 counties in Missouri and Illinois and distribute food to more than 392,000 people each year.
The Mallinckrodt team, along with the help of other members of the community worked together in the warehouse helping inspect, sort, and pack hundreds of food items for shipping. Each hour of volunteer labor translates to roughly 70 meals, so the combined efforts of the Mallinckrodt team provided 1,400 meals for families in need.
“It was so much fun volunteering with my colleagues and supporting an organization that positively impacts the lives of so many people in our community,” said Gena Holthaus, Senior Manager, Government Affairs and Community Engagement. “I am proud to work for a company that values volunteerism and encourages employees to give back during its Global Month of Service.”
