Once again, America has been rocked by senseless murders that appear to be rooted in racial hatred and stereotyping. Like all of you, I was shocked and saddened by this week’s attacks on spa employees in the Atlanta area, in which six of the eight victims were reported to be of Asian descent. As I shared following similarly jarring episodes last summer and earlier this year, these acts of violence require us to pause and reflect once more as a company, a community and a country on how words, actions and misdirected beliefs can negatively impact others around us, especially people in underrepresented communities.
While law enforcement authorities are continuing to investigate and the precise motives of the killer involved in the spa attacks aren’t yet clear, we are very mindful of the recent escalation in threats and violence targeting Asian Americans, especially in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and the angry rhetoric directed at China’s role in it. These latest killings are not isolated; rather, hate crimes targeting Asian Americans have increased by 150% in major U.S. cities in the last year. We stand in solidarity and in support with our colleagues of Asian descent and Asian communities in the U.S. and denounce these acts of violence.
As with the heinous racially motivated crimes of the recent past, I strongly condemn all acts of racism, hatred and personal stereotyping in any form. At Mallinckrodt, we are committed to diversity, equity and inclusion, and embrace the diverse experiences, cultures and views of our employees as a great differentiator and enduring strength for our organization.
As a nation, we must come together during these difficult times and take bold actions to eliminate these hateful acts of violence. While these latest events are a disheartening reminder that we have much work to do as a society, we are encouraged by the individual commitment of so many of you here at Mallinckrodt and are proud of our many ongoing initiatives to build a more equitable and just society, including the establishment of our business resource groups such as Namaste Asia.
Given these latest events, our Inclusion & Diversity (I&D) team has compiled resources and information to help our employees, partners and communities respond to xenophobic and anti-Asian incidents. We encourage you to review these resources, which can be found at the bottom of this blog, as they are essential to helping us progress as a society, and we thank our I&D team for providing them.
As our communities continue to navigate through these challenging times, I encourage you to check in with those in your extended personal network – especially those of Asian descent – to see how they are doing and feeling. Let’s continue to support one another and embrace what makes us different and unique during this time.
